On Sunday, July 12, the second in this series will be Hiking with Children. The two hour seminar will explain how to prepare for a hike with children, and how to share nature with your kids for a fun and safe outdoor adventure.
Leading the program will be Jeff Alt, an avid hiker, motivational speaker, and author of the award winning book, A Walk for Sunshine. Jeff will provide tips on gear, clothing, trip planning, hydration and safety while hiking with kids.
After the incident on Roan Mountain last week when two young children went missing for a night, this is probably a good opportunity to brush up on safety skills for anyone hiking with children.
Speaking of Shenandoah, the Shenandoah National Park Trust, the non-profit partner of the Park, has started a license plate program to raise funds for the park. This is basically the same program that was introduced by Friends of the Smokies and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy last year.Once the organization sells 1000 plates, the Trust will then earn $15 for every additional set sold or renewed.
The plates are available for pre-order now, pending DMV approval. In order to pass the first hurdle in the DMV process, the organization must collect 350 applications with payments by July 15, 2009.
