Fall Wildflowers Report for the Great Smokies

Most people, at the mention of wildflowers, automatically assume you're referring to the spring and summer months. However, the Great Smoky Mountains are blessed with blooming flowers throughout the year, and right now is no exception.

Almost every week throughout the year, Tom Harrington, a Smokies volunteer, hiker, and park naturalist, provides an update on what's currently in bloom on the Great Smoky Mountains Association website.

Here's what's currently in bloom based on Mr. Harrington's hikes in the last two weeks:

September 30, 2009:

Abrams Falls (Beginning to Falls) - Hawkweed, Southern Harebell, Whitewood Aster, Curtis Aster, Goldenrod Erect, Great Lobelia, White Snake Root, Pilewort, Woodland Sunflower, Blue Stemmed Goldenrod, and Joe Pye Weed. Special Note: No acorns found on this trail.


September 21, 2009:

Chestnut Top (Beginning to End) - Whitewood Aster, Curtis Aster, Goldenrod Erect, Indian Pipe, Great Lobelia, False Foxglove, and Southern Harebell.

School House Gap (Beginning to End) - Great Lobelia, Goldenrod Erect, Hearts-a-bustin, Curtis Aster, Cardinel Flower, False Foxglove, and Whitewood Aster.

Bote Mountain (Beginning to Finely Cane Trail) - Curtis Aster, Whitewood Aster, Goldenrod Erect, False Foxglove, Hearts-a-bustin, and Great Lobelia

West Prong (Beginning to End) - Southern Harebell, Whitewood Aster, White Snake Root, Great Lobelia, Hearts-a-bustin, Curtis Aster and Goldenrod Erect.
