The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will be showing the National Geographic film America's Wild Spaces: the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) at Halls Cinema 7, located at 3800 Neal Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. as part of their 2012 membership drive. This limited engagement is in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the completion of the A.T.

Stretching from Maine to Georgia, the A.T. is approximately 2,180 miles in length, making it one of the longest, continuously marked footpaths in the world. The film explores the natural beauty of the Trail and provides viewers the opportunity to discover the remote, and often unknown, corners of this 5-million-step journey.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from people who have hiked the Trail as well as those who volunteer to protect and maintain it. Guest speakers include Captains Sean Gobin and Mark Silvers, founders of Warrior Hike, 2012 thru hikers and US Veterans; Janet Hensley, volunteer and A.T. Community Ambassador; and Lenny Bernstein, ATC Board Member, 2,000-miler and trail maintainer.

"The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is excited to present this film on the big screen," stated Mark Wenger, executive director/CEO of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. "This event provides the public with an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Appalachian Trail and how to get involved with the Conservancy through our membership and volunteer programs."

Bruce "Buck" Nelson tackles the Pacific Crest Trail

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Almost two years ago I posted an article about adventurer Bruce Nelson.

Bruce personifies adventure. He’s hiked the 2168-mile Appalachian Trail, the 2700 plus miles of the Continental Divide Trail, canoed 2300 miles down the length of the Mississippi River, and has climbed Mt. McKinley (aka Denali). Additionally, in what he described as “one of the great adventures of my life”, he walked and paddled over 1,000 miles across Alaska in the summer of 2006 - alone! (see video)

Right now he's tackling the 2650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. So far he's already completed over 1000 miles. You can follow along on his trek, and check out some excellent photographs, by clicking here.

Speaking of the PCT, I recently saw an excellent program on the trail on the National Geographic Channel. It's part of the America's Wild Spaces series. Not sure if they will be showing the program again, but you could check with the Nat Geo website for more information.

Programming Note: Appalachian Trail on Nat Geo Channel

Thursday, November 5, 2009

As part of it's America's Wild Spaces series, the National Geographic Channel's next episode will be about the Appalachian Trail.

“America’s Wildest Places: The Appalachian Trail” features never before seen aerial footage and an in-depth look at America’s first National Scenic Trail.

National Geographic traveled from South to North, explored the remotest corners of the AT, and met the scientists fighting to keep this wilderness wild. The film will explore this 5 million step journey through the five distinct regions of the AT landscape, and learn what it takes to keep this ribbon of green safe, healthy, and totally wild.

The program will be aired next Tuesday, November 10, at 8 p.m., and 11 p.m., EST.

You can see a preview by clicking here.

You can also read more about the making of the film by clicking on this Appalachian Trail Conservancy article (PDF).
