Win a $10,000 Adventure Grant from Outside Magazine

Got a bold idea for an expedition? Outside Magazine is willing to give you $10,000 towards your ultimate adventure dream - if you can encourage enough people to vote for your idea.

To drop your name into the hat, all you'll need to do is submit a proposal by June 1st. Included with your proposal will be an essay, no longer than 500 words, a photo of yourself, and a video of two minutes or less. Outside editors will then select a handful of finalists and post the videos online so that readers can vote on the winner. Last year the magazine received several hundred applications, while thousands of readers voted in the contest.

Last year's winner was Daniel Alvarez, a former corporate lawyer (pictured above) who paddled a sea kayak from Minnesota to Florida.

The Outside Magazine 'Adventure Grant'

In celebration of their 35th anniversary Outside Magazine is seeking proposals for its first annual Adventure Grant, a $10,000 endowment to help fund a "smart, creative, and (perhaps) slightly foolhardy project" that they will feature in an upcoming issue.

Outside offers a few examples of the kinds of "audacious" missions they're looking for (taken from Outside stories):

* Sailing a homemade raft down the Hudson River

* Walking a perfectly straight line across Canada's Prince Edward Island

* Paddling a canoe from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine

If interested, and you think you have the right stuff, simply submit your proposed adventure by May 18th. Outside will then conduct a vote at facebook.com/outsidemagazine beginning on June 4th to decide the winner.

The AT and Great Smoky Mountains from a Chinese Perspective

The Kinda Long March: in which a team of Chinese men travel to the United States for the first time to hike the legendary Appalachian Trail — and find its manicured paths a little wimpy.

Outside Magazine has an excellent article in their March 2011 issue about six men from China who trekked across the Appalachian Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains (I assume last spring). Yang Xiao, the author, compares and contrasts the trail and the park to the fledgling sport of hiking in China, and provides a pretty unique and interesting perspective of the park, hiking in America, thru-hikers and tourists. It's a great read!

The 127 Defining Moments

Next weekend is the opening of 127 Hours, the new film about Aron Ralston, the adventurer who sawed his arm off after it became pinned under a boulder in an isolated slot canyon in Utah

To celebrate the release of the film, Outside Magazine is launching the 127 Defining Moments Contest, which seeks to inspire people to share their own life-changing or death-defying experiences in the great outdoors.

Outside will select 126 of those entrants to go along with Aron's to create the 127 Defining Moments. The 126 winners will receive some great outdoor gear from Eddie Bauer, Sierra Designs, Larabar and CamelBak, including Ten Grand Prize gear packages.

The 100 Best Adventure Web Sites

Outside Magazine has recently posted a list on their website of what they consider to be the top 100 Adventure websites. I'm sure a lot of you are already familiar with several of the sites on the list, but I'm sure you'll be able to find a few to add to your favorites.

The magazine took the time to group the sites into several categories, including travel, sports, adventure and environment, health, gear, weather, phones and then maps, widgets and friends.

When Outside put the list together, they worked off the mantra of "Get the info you need. Then get out the door."
