Appalachian Trail Conservancy Launches 'Zoom in to the Appalachian Trail' Photo Contest

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is now accepting submissions for its “Zoom in to the Appalachian Trail” photo contest, a nationwide search for the best photos featuring close-up shots of the details that make up the Appalachian Trail (A.T.).

The photo contest asks participants to recognize that the A.T. is not only a footpath, but is also home to a vast array of wildlife and vegetation, scenery, unique people and special Trail communities. Contestants will submit a photograph of a favorite feature along the Trail. Photos may include people, places, scenery or more.

“The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is excited to see the outdoor community’s appreciation of the Appalachian Trail displayed artistically,” said Javier Folgar, the ATC’s director of marketing and communications. “We hope that each photo will bring to light the special connections people have with the Trail.”

The top three photographers will each win a one-year membership to the ATC and will be featured in A.T. Journeys, the official magazine of the ATC. The grand prize winner will also win a custom ATC-themed hammock, courtesy of ENO™.

Photo submissions will be accepted through Tuesday, June 3, and can be uploaded via the ATC’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ATHike. The public will then vote for their favorite photos through Sunday, July 13. Winners will be announced the week of July 14.

Department of the Interior Announces 2013 "Share the Experience" Photo Contest

The Department of the Interior has announced the start of the 2013 "Share the Experience" contest, giving amateur photographers the chance to join the ranks of Ansel Adams, Thomas Moran, and others who have found recognition for their photographs of the nation's public lands.

The "Share the Experience" photo contest showcases our nation's public lands, including national wildlife refuges, forests, recreation areas and our national parks, such as Glacier, Rocky Mountain and the Great Smoky Mountains, and draws entries from all across the United States. It is the largest national park and public land photo contest for amateur photographers.

The winning photograph will appear on the 2015 America the Beautiful pass for entrance to 2,000 federal recreation sites, including national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national forests. All entries have the chance to be featured on the Interior Department’s popular Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Prizes provided by the National Park Foundation, Active Network, Air Wick and Historic Hotels of America include a $15,000 cash prize, a Columbia backpack, a pass to the national parks and other federal lands, and other items for the grand prize winner. Second and third place winners, as well as 7 Honorable Mention winners, will also receive prizes.

The "Share the Experience" begins May 10, 2013 and runs through December 31, 2013. Amateur photographers can participate by uploading photos on www.sharetheexperience.org.

"Share the Experience" is sponsored by Active Network, Air Wick, Historic Hotels of America and the National Park Foundation in partnership with the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.

2012 National Natural Landmarks Photo Contest Winners Announced

The votes have been counted and the winners have been selected in the ninth annual National Natural Landmarks photo contest.

Thanks goes to all the NPS employees who assisted in selecting the winners of this year’s contest. Photographs were submitted of 69 different NNL sites from 28 states and Puerto Rico, each one representing the beauty and diversity of the nation’s natural heritage. The top 14 photographs will appear in the 2013 NNL calendar.

“Good Times on the Appalachian Trail” Photo Contest

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is looking for great photos of people enjoying the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in 2011! The ATC is looking for images that illustrate your idea of a perfect day on the A.T.

Creative and unique shots are encouraged. Send the ATC photos of you and your loved ones hiking your favorite section, enjoying an overlook, staying overnight at a shelter, swimming in a lake, or just enjoying being out on the Trail. Whatever it may be, the ATC wants to know how you enjoyed your time out on the Trail this year.

Rules:

• Photos must be taken on the A.T. during the year 2011.
• Photos must contain an image of at least one person.
• You must be the owner of the photo.
• Participants can only submit one photo.
• Any photos conflicting with the ATC’s Leave No Trace™ (LNT) principles will be disqualified. For more information about LNT principles visit www.appalachiantrail.org/LNT.
• No photos can include nudity, inappropriate or illegal activities.
• Photos must be in .jpg format at 300 DPI as an email attachment.

Submission:

Submissions should be sent to chobbs@appalachiantrail.org as email attachments between October 18th and November 10th. Then, the ATC’s panel of judges will select the top 20 photos.

Timeline:

• Photo Submission: October 18, 2011 - November 10, 2011
• Voting Period: November 11, 2011 – December 11, 2011
• Photos showcased in the ATC’s Visitor Center in Harpers Ferry, WV: November 12, 2011 through November 19, 2011 from 9am-5pm each day.
• Winner Announced: Week of December 12th, 2011

Prizes:

Prizes will be awarded to the Top 3 contestants.

The Grand Prize winner will have their photo featured in A.T. Journeys (ATJ) as well as receive a set of LekiSummitAS Antishock Trekking Poles valued at $100, generously donated by Leki. The poles features a RoundTop COR-TEC Grip, Classic Expander Lock System,Triple Spring Antishock System, a performance basket, a universal carbide tip, with an ultra sonic finish.

Second and third place winners will also have their photos featured in ATJ and will receive a small recognition prize from the ATC.

National Natural Landmarks Photo Contest Winners Announced

One hundred and fifty-two images representing 92 different National Natural Landmarks sites across 31 states were submitted to the 8th Annual NNL Photo Contest. A National Park Service-wide vote took place in mid-August and the winners were announced today. Top honors went to Debra Miller of Highlands Ranch, Colorado for her photograph of Hanging Lake, east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

The three winning photos and the 10 Honorable Mentions will be featured in the 2012 NNL calendar, specially designed to commemorate the NNL Program’s 50th Anniversary. “These stunning photographs not only highlight the beauty of these spectacular places, but the longevity of the National Park Service’s relationship with partners for resource conservation,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis.

There are 591 national natural landmarks across the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. NNLs are designated by the Secretary of the Interior following rigorous scientific study, and include features on private, state, municipal, and federal lands. Participation in the program is voluntary.

Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and RaysWeather.Com Partner on 2012 Calendar

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and RaysWeather.Com announced yesterday a partnership to produce the 2012 Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation Calendar.

RaysWeather.Com has sponsored a photo contest and calendar featuring photography from northwest North Carolina for the past nine years. For the 2012 calendar, the photo contest will solicit entries spanning the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Waynesboro, Virginia, to Cherokee, North Carolina.

Depending on the number of calendars sold, 44% to 70% of net calendar proceeds will be donated to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.

The 2012 Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation Calendar photo contest is open for online entries through June 15, 2011. According to Dr. Ray Russell, President of RaysWeather.com, "We're looking for the best, most unique photos capturing the beauty, activities, and essence of the Blue Ridge Parkway in all seasons of the year."

Twenty-five photos from each of the four seasons will be selected as finalists and will be voted on by RaysWeather.Com readers. "We are so happy to be partnering with RaysWeather.Com to offer what is sure to be a must-have calendar for 2012. The photos that are already pouring in are so wonderful, we can't wait to see the winners," said Carolyn Ward, CEO of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Share the Experience Photo Contest accepting entries through 12/31

The National Park Service published a press release today reminding citizens that they can still submit their photos for the Share the Experience Photo Contest through Dec. 31.

The photo taken by the grand prize winner will appear on a 2012 America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. He or she will also receive a prize package that includes a trip for four to a federal recreation area, photography equipment, and a pass to the national parks and other federal lands for 2012. Second-, third-, and fourth-place winners, and 10 Honorable Mention winners will also receive prizes.

Amateur photographers can participate by uploading photos on www.sharetheexperience.org or through Facebook, Flickr, or Shutterfly to the contest website.

National Natural Landmarks Photo Contest

The seventh annual National Natural Landmarks photo contest is now underway.

Each entrant may submit up to three photographs to the contest, but each photograph must be from a different National Natural Landmarks (NNL) site. Please note a change in the contest rules this year. To promote greater diversity of NNL sites represented in the contest and calendar, images of the 13 NNL sites featured in large format in the 2010 calendar will not be accepted. These images can be found by clicking here.

Be sure to visit and photograph your favorite NNL today. To find a NNL near you, please click here. There are more than a dozen sites in the region just outside of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The National Natural Landmarks Program, administered by the National Park Service, recognizes outstanding examples of our country’s natural history and supports landowner’s voluntary conservation efforts. It is the only natural areas program of national scope that recognizes the best examples of biological and geological features in both public and private ownership. The 586 NNL sites nationwide possess scientific significance, educational value and exceptional scenic beauty.

American Trails announces winners of Photo Contest

American Trails recently announced the winners of their 2009 National Recreation Trails Photo Contest. They've posted all 240 entries into the contest, including the winners which have been categorized according to hiking, equestrian, water, bicycling and accessible trails under the broad category of trail use.

You can also find photos based on trail feature, such as arts and interpretation, rail and canal trails, innovative facilities, artitistic merit and historic features.

They also posted photos under the category of trail management, which includes trail sharing, trail work, health and fitness, and volunteers.

There are many outstanding photos in this collection.

American Trails is the only national, nonprofit organization working on behalf of all trail interest.

Share the Experience Photo Contest

America's Federal Recreation Lands are special places that bring people together and leave visitors enriched. From scenic vistas to diverse wildlife to historic landmarks, these lands offer a myriad of picture perfect moments to capture.

The National Park Service and its partners are inviting amateur photographers to submit up to three photos to the Share the Experience contest through December 31, 2009. At the end of the submission period the public will be invited to vote for their favorite photo.

You can enter your photos in the contest for a chance to have your winning photo adorn the 2011 Federal Recreation Lands Pass, earn you an Olympus E-3 DSLR Camera Kit and a trip to a Federal Recreation Area of your choice. There are fourteen chances to win national recognition and many great prizes.

Carolina Mountain Club Photo Contest Winners

Several weeks ago I posted a blog announcing the Carolina Mountain Club Photo Contest. The theme for this year's contest was "Defining the Carolina Mountain Club Experience".

Carolina Mountain Club Photo Contest

The Carolina Mountain Club is currently accepting great photos for their new photo contest. The theme for this year's contest is "Defining the Carolina Mountain Club Experience".

The club's theme is broad enough to permit almost any club related image and could include vistas, forests, streams, waterfalls, close-ups, wildlife, flowers, the seasons, weather… even club meetings or events.

The contest ends on March 31, 2009 and members will select the top three winners at the Spring Social, April 25, 2009 after seeing a slide show of the best entries.

You must be a member to enter the contest. Of course it only cost $20 for an individual member to join the oldest Hiking and Trail Maintaining Club in Western North Carolina.
