The Woody Gap Trailhead, located in Union County at the intersection of Hwy 60 and the Appalachian Trail in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, will close on Monday, Aug 13, and will reopen on Saturday, Aug 18 to allow crews to repave the parking area. This closure includes both parking areas located on each side of Hwy 60.

The Chestatee Overlook, located in Lumpkin County south of Woody Gap along Hwy 60, will close beginning Monday, Aug 20, and will reopen on Saturday, Aug 25 to allow crews to repave that parking area.

The areas will be clearly marked with notices two weeks in advance of the closures. Any vehicles parked in the lots during the closures will be towed at the owners’ expense. Alternate access points to the Appalachian Trail include Neels Gap on Hwy 129, Amicalola Falls access trail off Hwy 52, and other access points along Forest Service 42.

On Tuesday, December 1, Clingmans Dome Road will be closed for the winter. This will impact access to several trailheads along the road, including; the Spruce-Fir, Road Prong, Sugarland Mountain, Fork Ridge, Noland Divide, Forney Creek, and Forney Ridge (Andrews Bald) trails.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail will also be closing on December 1. Trails impacted by this road closing include; Trillium Gap, Grapeyard Ridge, and Baskins Creek Trail.

The last road to shut-down for the season will be the Little Greenbrier Road, which will be closed on January 1, and will impact the Little Brier Gap Trail.

Of course all of the trails mentioned above will continue to be open but you may have problems reaching these particular trailheads.

Please Note:

Due to repaving projects on Clingmans Dome Road and Roaring Fork Road, the normal spring reopening dates (mid to late March) will not be valid. Clingmans Dome Road is scheduled to be closed through May 28, then intermittently opened until June 18.

The Roaring Fork Motor Trail near Gatlinburg will be closed until May 28, while the two-way portion of the connected Cherokee Orchard Road will be managed as a single lane during that time.

A couple weeks ago Smokies officials announced plans for a repaving project for the Cosby Campground as part of the federal stimulus plan.

Yesterday, on the Smokies website, officials announced that trailhead access from the Cosby Campground to Lower Mount Cammerer Trail, Snake Den Ridge Trail, and Low Gap Trail will also be closed due to the project.

The closing begins on Labor Day, September 7, 2009.

Although trailhead access within the campground will be closed, these trails will remain open and hikers will be able to access them via connecting trails from the nearby Picnic Area parking lots.
