In the "Rip & Go" section of the March issue of Backpacker Magazine there's an article on hiking the Thunderhead Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains.
The monthly column describes a three-day, two night backpacking trip that begins at the Great Smoky Mountains Tremont Institute near Townsend. Some of the highlights of the 27.9-mile hike include Spence Field, Rocky Top, Lynn Camp Falls and the Middle Prong of the Little River.
This is a great loop option, especially if you're considering doing this in early-mid June: you'll have the added benefit of seeing the incredible show of Mountain Laurel atop Spence Field at that time.
