Parson Branch Road will be closed

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park website just announced that Parson Branch Road in Cades Cove will be closed until late spring due to storm damage.

In that same area, Forge Creek Road has been closed due to storm damage back in December. This road is scheduled to re-open in mid-March according to the Park website.

These road closings impact access to the Gregory Bald and the Gregory Ridge trailheads.

It also affects the Hannah Mountain trailhead, which I needed to do to finish my Smokies 900. So last Saturday we walked 4 miles on Parsons Branch Road from Highway 129 to get to Hannah Mountain Trail, and yes, the road needs repairs. I'll get it written up on my blog this week at www.smokyscout.blogspot.com.

Smoky Scout - you are so right - I missed that - good catch.

Does it look like they have a lot of work to do?

Just a few washouts so all it needs is grading. We saw a pile of corrugated pipe at one spot and some heavy equipment at the parking area by the Gregory Bald/Hannah Mountain trailheads. Of course, the section from there down to Cades Cove could be worse. It may just be a matter of finding the funds to do the work.
