As a result of the rain today, huge improvements were made in the containment of both wildfires in the Smokies. Here's the latest from the Wildfire Incident Information System:
Stony Ridge Fire: Rain on Friday morning helped firefighters complete suppression operations along the Blue Ridge Parkway. With more rain in the forecast, only a single crew will be kept on the fire on Saturday to complete mop-up. On Sunday, May 3, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians plans to reassume command of the fire.
The Blue Ridge Parkway re-opened at 7:00 PM on Friday evening.
Laurel Falls II Fire: The Laurel Falls 2 Fire is fully contained. With more rain forecast, the fire will be unstaffed on Saturday, May 2, 2009. The National Park Service will reassume command of the incident on Sunday, May 3.
All trails previously closed by the fire are now open.

Glade the rain has helped with containing the wildfires.
I've been up here all weekend in the rain, with very little hiking. At least the rain is not for naught.
Any recommendations on a very short hike tomorrow morning? I gotta head out around noon.
JP - sorry, I just got this message around noon today. I was at the Ky Derby yesterday and a party late last night.
Hopefully, you found a good trail.
Jeff
No problem. Hope the derby was fun. Did you happen to bet on the long shot?
We woke up this morning and it was pouring rain, so headed out of the Smokies. I did find two great little hikes in Georgia on the way home though, Helton Creek Falls & Brasstown Bald
The Derby was great - I think you guys got all the rain we were suppossed to get. I wish I bet on the longshot! Really, betting on the ponies is a crap shoot.
Hope you liked Brasstown. I hiked it a couple of years ago.
