Local Resident Commits Suicide on Shenandoah Trail

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

NPS Digest is reporting this morning that a local resident committed suicide on a trail in Shenandoah National Park late last week.

A 53-year-old Luray man was found dead on the Mary’s Rock Trail, part of the Appalachian Trail, about a half mile from the Panorama parking area. The body was found by a couple hiking the trail. The couple had met the man on their way up the trail and described having a pleasant conversation with him before they continued their hike. Upon their return, they found the man lying along the trail, a victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Investigators concluded that his death was a suicide.

What a horrible situation for the couple that found him, especially after just having contact with him.

that was my father. & it makes me mad knowing that the 2 people did not stop him. people say they feel sorry for the prople who found him. People should feel sorry for the family and OUR loss. you would think you would of heard the gun shot....

How can the two people stop him if they didn't know he was goign to do it? Maybe they didn't hear the shot? And even if they did it might have been too late. I am sorry for your lost but don't blame another person for his actions. You never know what one person is thinking at any given time. Plus its a tererible to witness such sadness.
